Common Link

Our most basic common link is
that we all inhabit this planet.
We all breathe the same air.
We all cherish our children's future.
 And, we are all mortal.

Belonging To Yourself

There is a privacy about it which no other season gives you....
In spring, summer and fall people sort of have an open season on each other;
only in the winter, in the country, can you have
longer, quiet stretches when you can savor belonging to yourself.

Light Within

“People are like stained-glass windows.
They sparkle and shine when the sun is out,
but when the darkness sets in,
their true beauty is revealed only if there is a light from within.”

Nobody but Myself

All my life I had been looking for something,
and everywhere I turned someone tried to tell me what it was.
I accepted their answers too,
though they were often in contradiction and even self-contradictory.
  I was naïve.
I was looking for myself and asking everyone except myself questions which
I, and only I, could answer.
It took me a long time and much painful boomeranging
of my expectations to achieve a realization
everyone else appears to have been born with:
that I am nobody but myself.

Intangible

Christmas - that magic blanket that wraps itself about us,
that something so intangible that it is like a fragrance.
It may weave a spell of nostalgia.
Christmas may be a day of feasting, or of prayer,
but always it will be a day of remembrance -
a day in which we think of everything we have ever loved.

Not Missing a Thing

I think ‘vegan’ is a beautiful word.  It is more than just a description for our diet.   I see it as a visible template for an ethical, healthy, responsible, and rational life.  Because it describes our character, it says we do not take the life of another living being to satisfy our wants.

The Spirit of Christmas

“Until one feels the spirit of Christmas, there is no Christmas.

All else is outward display - so much tinsel and decorations.

For it isn't the holly, it isn't the snow.

It isn't the tree not the firelight's glow.

It's the warmth that comes to the heart.”

Happy Birthday Sean!

Happy Birthday Baby!
I love you more than I could ever say.
You are growing up so fast.
Just remember ........

"Oh, take your time... Don't live too fast,
Troubles will come and they will pass.
You'll find a woman, you'll find love,
And don't forget son,
There is someone up above.

And be a simple, kind of man.
Oh be something, you love and understand.
Baby be a simple, kind of man.
Oh, won't you do this for me son,
If you can?

Forget your lust, for the rich man's gold
All that you need, is in your soul,
And you can do this, oh baby, if you try.
All that I want for you my son,
Is to be satisfied.

Boy, don't you worry... you'll find yourself.
Follow your heart, lord, and nothing else.
And you can do this, oh baby, if you try.
All that I want for you my son,
Is to be satisfied.

Baby be a simple, be a simple man.
Oh be something, you love and understand.
Baby be a simple, kind of man. "

Cool Beans

I bet it seems weird that we have a picture of coffee on the blog.
Well, it all started on Monday morning.
I woke up, dragged out of bed, and checked on the blog.
Becca put up a quote by Dean Koontz, one of our favorite authors.
I thought that was cool.
On Wednesday, she used a quote by Stephen King.
Well, now she's just showing off!
Of course I had to issue a challenge, being who I am.
Becca, being who she is, took it.
"If you can find a Bentley Little quote for Friday's post and make it a hat trick, I'll buy coffee".
Anyone who knows anything about us knows of our unwavering loyalty to Cool Beans
so of course this will be Cool Beans coffee.
Who the heck is going to find a quote for a blog called "Happy Hippie Heart" from Bentley Little.
Bentley Little of twisted freaky books like Dominion and The Vanishing.
Becca.  That's who.
So, I owe Becca coffee.
The debt will be paid on Monday.
Everyone should bask  in the awesomeness of Becca.

Fear

I’ve always thought that fear is man’s natural state.
It’s why we have armies and policemen, why we band together in cities and countries,
why we jump when there’s a loud noise nearby, why we lock our doors and leave our porch lights on at night.
I’ve said this before, but I’ll say it again:
I don’t care who you are, if you were stripped naked and placed somewhere alone in the dark
and you heard a sound nearby, you would not laugh, you would not be excited,
you would not be aroused or feel romantic, you would be afraid.
It’s the one gut reaction that we all share,
that can be counted on to kick in at the same specific times for everyone in the world.
It’s why jump shots in horror movies are so effective. They’re easy, they’re predictable . . . but they work.
The fear in us is very close to the surface, and it doesn’t take much to bring it out
That’s why horror has always been around
 and always will be around.
~Bentley Little~

Chaos

At the core of every ordered system,
whether a family or factory,
is chaos.
But in the whirl of every chaos
lies a strange order,
waiting to be found.

Unscatter Me

I feel my life is so scattered right now.
Like it’s all these small pieces of paper and someone’s turned on the fan.
But talking to you makes me feel like the fan’s been turned off for a little bit.
Like things could actually make sense.
You completely unscatter me,
and I appreciate that so much.

Science Pig, Shannon, and me!

Nothing makes my science nerd hippie heart happier than a kid learning science....well, a kid and three pigs!

Shannon made a model of the ocean floor and did a fantastic job.  As you can see, pig is wearing goggles so that nothing happens to her.

Science on!

Not Perfect People

Congratulations!
  You're not perfect!
It's ridiculous to want to be perfect anyway.
But then, everybody's ridiculous sometimes, except perfect people.
You know what perfect is?
Perfect is not eating or drinking or talking or moving a muscle or making even the teensiest mistake.
Perfect is never doing anything wrong - which means never doing anything at all.
Perfect is boring!
So you're not perfect!  Wonderful!  Have fun!
Eat things that give you bad breath!  Trip over your own shoelaces!  Laugh!
Let somebody else laugh at you!
Perfect people never do any of those things.
All they do is sit around and sip weak tea and think about how perfect they are.
But they're really not one-hundred-percent perfect anyway.
You should see them when they get the hiccups!
Phooey!  Who needs 'em?
You can drink pickle juice and imitate gorillas and do silly dances and sing stupid songs and wear funny hats and be as imperfect as you please and still be a good person.
Good people are hard to find nowadays.
And they're a lot more fun than perfect people any day of the week.

Comic Opera

Eating, loving, singing and digesting are, in truth,

and they pass like bubbles of a bottle of champagne.

without having enjoyed them

My Heart Soars

The beauty of the trees,
the softness of the air,
the fragrance of the grass,
speaks to me.
The summit of the mountain,
the thunder of the sky,
speaks to me.
The faintness of the stars,
the trail of the sun,
the strength of fire,
and the life that never goes away,
they speak to me.
And my heart soars.
